Here is what you should expect as students at CCHS. A checklist, if you will:
Freshmen-
- Student Assistance Program (SAP) orientation.
- Advisory activities once per month to introduce school policy, build relationships with fellow students, and build rapport with staff.
- One period during your world language course (Spanish I or German I), the school counselors will discuss thier role in the school and what resources are available to you.
- All freshman will take Futures I. In Futures I you will:
- See your school counselor 3 days times to evaluate your career maturity
- Continue work on your portfolio and graduation project
- Learn about yourself and available careers.
- See your school counselor 2 days to create a mock high school schedule
- Course selection, including 1.5 Pathway electives
Sophmores-
All sophomores will take Futures II. In Futures II you will:
- Learn about your interests and how they relate to careers
- Continue to work on you graduation project.
- Begin to apply knowledge of yourself and careers to guided career exploration.
- Your school counselor will be visiting your Futures II class for 3 days to administer a career interest inventory.
- All sophomores will take the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) in February, followed by an interpretation with your school counselor.
- Your school counselor will visit your Health class to discuss common adolescent issues including identity development, relationships, drugs and alcohol, and depression.
- In sum, your school counselor will be meeting with all sophomores.
- Health class do discuss adolescent issues
- We will review and interpret your ASVAB (abilities) results
- We will reintroduce your COPS (interests) and compare to your ASVAB.
- We will connect your abilities with your interests and talk about appropriate career clusters.
- Course selection, including 1.5 Pathway electives.
Juniors-
If you are college bound:
- Register for PSAT in September.
- Take the PSAT in October.
- Register for SAT between October and January.
- PSAT Scores will be returned and interpreted in the beginning of December.
- All Juniors will take Futures III
- In Futures III students will:
- Practice resume, cover letter writing
- Practice interview techniques
- Mr. Bartholomew and Mr. Currey will visit to discuss post-secondary planning.
- Small groups of 3 - 4 students will visit Mr. Bartholomew or Mrs. Fairchild to speak about plans after high school.
- Completion of a 1 day job shadowing
- Completion of the graduation project
- Course selection, including 3.0 Pathway electives.
Seniors-
Seniors at Central Columbia are in a great position to enjoy a flexible and experience-oriented senior year through internships, work experience, and college courses. Here are a few ideas to keep in mind as you are enjoying your final year at CCHS.
Summer
- Contact employers in your pathway for internships or work experience opportunities. The earlier you get this done, the better for you and your senior year.
- Continue to research colleges and narrow your list.
Fall
- Your counselors will review the processes for applying to colleges and/or searching for employment.
Spring
- Make your college selection
- Work on your resume for future employers
