This course focuses on the mastery of the National Standards for Foreign Language Education, as well as the AASL Standards for the 21st-Century Learner. The Beginner/Novice course will use a natural approach and a variety of teaching methods and activities to immerse each student in the Spanish language and culture. The use of TPRS (Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling) will further ensure that students will experience whole language in context. There is a strong emphasis on building a beginning level vocabulary and developing reading comprehension skills through the use of level one “readers” and video supplements while basic grammar rules are presented and applied, this course focuses primarily on receiving a written or spoken message as opposed to drilling and practicing grammatical structures.
