English 11

American Literature offers the finest in traditional, classical American authors, as well as a good representation of quality modern writers. The course begins with a chronological approach to literature and includes a contemporary or historical perspective, linking past to present. The history of the time period is presented in conjunction with various writings, which are often perceived to be a reflection of the political, social, and philosophical events of the day. Reader-response strategies are presented to help students connect their own experiences with the selections. Opportunities for personal and critical responses as well as integrated workshops for writing, reading, vocabulary and study skills are vital. Several novels are included for deeper analysis of a theme or culture.
