Grade 10 Literature

CLASS EXPECTATIONS & SYLLABUS

Grade 10 English Literature

Course Outline: This course is a focused study of the skills, strategies, and expectations as outlined by the Common Core Language Arts standards for success with our Keystone assessment.  We will use classic literature of various genres to review, practice, and enhance the skills of critical reading, literary analysis, and written expression.  As we continue to improve the skills for success on the Keystone, students will also enhance strategies for success on the SAT, including vocabulary acquisition and critical reading. Students should expect a variety of assessments, including but not limited to quizzes (both announced and surprise), unit objective assessments, formal writing (both research based and literary self analysis), and projects.  The literature of the course is various and spectacular; we will study the classic novel structure with To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee; we will examine historical drama with Arthur Miller’s The Crucible; we will study the power of the allegory with George Orwell’s Animal Farm, and we will analyze the elements of literature and their relationships with units from our text that blend a variety of genres.
