Welcome to American Legal Systems!  This class is designed to introduce students to the science and study of law (known as ‘jurisprudence’).  In American Legal Systems, a primary focus will be to provide students with a realistic understanding of our legal system and how it operates.  Points of emphasis will focus upon the major influences and foundational documents of America’s legal system, civil liberties and responsibilities, the processes of the criminal justice systems, and an introduction to criminology and punishment.   The class will be broken into 2 major units:

1. Constitutional Law: foundational basis of the American legal system, structure of judicial branch, major SCOTUS decisions, analysis of civil liberties
2. American Criminal Justice System: Due process and procedures, who/why people commit crimes, types/effectiveness of punishment, current major issues in law enforcement
